Protect your Castle!
Moat® Technologies LLC was founded to create simple and beautiful technology that makes it easy to protect and enjoy your home. Much of the home technology market is dominated by huge companies and foreign investors that have no personal experience with the products they sell. At Moat, we are committed to making products that make a difference, not just products that make money.
Moat has released the Smart Climate Sensor, and the world is a better place. We are constantly working to listen to your input to improve, and to make new products that help you protect and enjoy your castle.
Soon after Moat founder Erik Laybourne had his first child (a beautiful baby girl), San Diego had another year of heavy rain. Realizing how important maintaining the proper climate is to the health of his family, he started searching for the right product to help. Smart thermostats like Nest® and Ecobee® seemed great, but required whole home systems that cost a fortune to install and run. A few products popped up that were small and cheap, but they were too confusing to use and were cluttered with unhelpful and confusing graphs and features. So he started developing the Moat Smart Climate Sensor®, to create a product that was portable, beautiful, and easy to use.
The Laybourne family purchased a beautiful home in San Diego California and… the nightmares began. The first winter after moving in, San Diego received the most rain it had in a decade! After the first big storm, they found a few feet of water in their crawlspace, and had no idea where to turn. To their astonishment, at the time there was not a single connected device they could turn to that would help them monitor the humidity in their crawlspace. Existing products seemed to only provide confusion and fear where there should have been clarity and peace of mind. That’s when the idea for Moat’s first product, the Smart Climate SensorTM, was born.
Moat Technologies LLC founder Erik Laybourne started working for a consumer electronics startup named Waterfi®. While at the company, he gained a vision for how small businesses can change lives. During his seven years with the organization, Erik got to do everything from interacting directly with the customers to designing products, apps, websites, production processes, and more. Although large companies can do great things, he realized that small businesses can do something large companies can’t: constantly listen to customers and quickly adapt to their needs.
